How to Make Your Brain Work Better

Brain Health

Brain experts say some things are essential for good memory in anyone.

Plenty of Sleep - Most people need at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Less sleep makes a person more likely to have problems with memory, judgment, and absent-mindedness.

Breathe Deeply - As much as 20% to 25% of the air you breathe circulates in the blood that nourishes the brain. Many people, especially older people, are shallow breathers. But the brain needs a fresh supply of oxygen for good health. Use this exercise often:

  1. Inhale to the count of four
  2. Hold for a count of seven
  3. Then exhale slowly to the count of eight

Exercise - Regular physical exercise is not only good for the body, it's good for the brain. Exercise brings oxygen to the brain, reduces stress, and improves memory. It also causes the brain to release endorphins, "feel good" chemicals that can make you feel happier.

Drink Water - Seventy-two percent of the brain is composed of water. Dehydration can cause health problems, including memory problems. Be sure you are drinking enough fluids. Eight glasses of water each day is recommended.

Avoid Excess Alcohol - People who drink too much alcohol often show shrinkage or atrophy of the cerebral cortex, the seat of memory, learning, reasoning, intelligence, and emotions.

Avoid Smoking - Smoking constricts blood vessels, making less blood, oxygen, and nutrients available to the brain. It also replaces oxygen with carbon monoxide, a chemical that damages brain cells.

Eat a Balanced Diet - Malnutrition can contribute to poor health, including poor memory. Make sure you are eating a balanced diet with foods from all of the food groups.
